在四卷福音書中,  前三卷福音書(對觀福音) 在材料,大綱都很相似, 但約翰福音跟這三卷對觀福音書都有很不同的地方。 約翰福音不但是要記錄耶穌的生平 更重要的是要 表明耶穌是基督, 是神的兒子, 信了祂，就可以因祂的名得生命 (約20:31)  希望透過研讀這卷書,  我們能夠更了解神 對世人的救贖計劃。
